What or who inspired you to pick up art?

I picked up art at a very young age, when I was about 5. My parents were mostly the ones who encouraged me to do art. As a kid, I didn’t really know if I truly liked the arts but I loved looking at art and always had the patience for it.

How has your IBCP experience been?

My IBCP (International Baccalaureate Career-related Programme) experience can be described as mind-opening and interesting. I was exposed to many opportunities that I never thought I would have experienced otherwise, and it has forced me to reflect deeper about my art.

How has your art-making process developed over the years?

It has developed from detailed representations to more abstract paintings. I would say that I am still doing what I was doing — it just sort of evolved until now.

What do you intend to pursue in the future?

I intend to continue pursuing arts in the future. I want to become a full time artist and work with people in multidisciplinary sectors.

What is one of your favourite artworks that you’ve created?

Focus, 2021

120 x 70 cm

Mixed media

This work is titled “Focus”, and is inspired by the visual qualities of HDBs in Singapore, where the closely stacked living spaces and crowded neighbourhoods furnish our landscape. Despite the economic practicality of HDB flats, its repetitive design can obstruct our psychological capacity by hindering our creativity and imagination. The artist’s fatigued disposition due to the confined spaces is reflected in the lawlessness of the architecture, creating an ambiguous imagery that is difficult to focus on.

The chaotic buildings are a metaphor for our hectic lifestyles in a fast-paced city, where the act of focusing has become a challenge.
