THE NATIONAL DAY EDITION

August 2021:

NEW! COLLABORATION publiCASion

Read a literary work inspired by one of our local artists. Teo Eng Seng!

Georgette Chen

Her work is a marriage of the West and East, as she melded techniques with local subject themes and matter, depicting tropical fruits and the local people in techniques more reminiscent of the French Post-Impressionists and Cubists.

Chua Mia Tee

Chua Mia Tee was born in China and moved to Singapore during the Sino-Japanese War, where he studied sketching and painting in different media. His works explored the consequences of rapid urban development upon culture and history, and aimed to capture the spirit of the people here while depicting both societal and national concerns. Known as an artist who depicted the stark realities of contemporary life, he painted in a vivid, realist style, and was just as known for his landscapes of Singapore and his portraits. His work is also featured on Singapore’s currency, being the portrait of President Yusof Ishak, drawn in 1998.

Anthony Poon

Anthony Poon was a second-generation Singaporean Artist. His work features themes of abstraction, such as colour, symmetry, dimension and form, and are void of representational attributes. He was best known for experimenting with styles such as Optical Art. In particular, his "Wave" series, which consisted of 2D and 3D relief paintings as well as sculptures, was a harmonious balance of colour, form, line and shape.
