JASON DECAIRES TAYLOR

I found out about Jason Taylor when doing a marine biology internship last year, as one of his artworks was showcased on the Sirru Fen Sushi Island in the Maldives.

I was very intrigued by his innovative works that deal with sustainable materials and why he exhibits his works underwater.

about him

Jason Taylor is a British sculptor, whose works take on an activist nature. He is known as the first artist to create an underwater museum.

His artworks address poverty, addiction, capitalism, equal rights and climate change among other issues.

To see his artworks you would have to get away from your comfort zone and delve into the depths of the ocean!

As his works consist of live organisms like corals spawning and attaching to the sculptures, his artworks are ever-changing and transient.

The materials he uses are particularly unique because the sculptures are created using non-toxic pH neutral marine-grade cement which is free from pollutants and can thus, essentially integrate into the environment placed.

Taylor encourages viewers to reflect on their daily actions. He seeks to make an impact on society by bringing about global environmental awareness of ecosystems.

He changes typical perceptions of museums from grand, old buildings to hard-to-access oceans.

“We call it a museum for a very important reason. Museums are places of preservation, conservation and education. They’re places where we keep objects of great value to us, where we value them simply for being themselves.”
