VINCENT TRINIDAD

Screen Shot 2021-03-10 at 10.38.14 AM.pn

Vincent Trinidad combines the art style of Ukiyo-e together with modern, cute and retro (Vaporwave, Outrun) aesthetics to create works inspired by Japanese traditional and pop culture.

He grew up in the 80s, and watched shows such as “Transformers, Thundercats…Power Rangers, Jetman, Bioman”, all of which made him reproduce the 80s and Japanese designs unconsciously. His travels to Japan then heavily impacted his interpretation of Japanese designs.

MEET THE ARTIST

I just make what really inspires me the most and what I love to do. Creating art needs a lot of intense focus and determination because it is really time consuming. You need to love the subjects that you are making to be sane.

His work usually employs bold, clean cut forms with minimal shading to reflect the traditional woodblock appearance of Ukiyo-e art. Many of his works feature a black background for his subjects to be the primary focus. These main subjects are usually coloured in neon, thus creating a more retro aesthetic, oftentimes providing his images with a warm, muted glow.

“My fascination to Retro Aesthetics and Japanese Art leads me to create a collection of works that combines Outrun, Vaporwave and Ukiyo-e Japanese Woodblock prints.”

He starts off by taking references and planning the layout of his art. During the actual art-making process he listens to documentaries by BBC or Ted talk on YouTube, as it helps him forget the amount of detail work to be done and just enjoy the shape, line, color and brush strokes of the work.

Trinidad’s art style is unique as he explores and combines varied conventional art elements of the Western pop-culture. This provides the audience with a refreshing take on the Ukiyo-e art genre.

He encourages new artists to “not be afraid to take the leap… so bet on your skills, work hard but manage and lower down your expenses.”
