I had discovered Slinkachu when I needed an artist reference on something unconventional and intriguing. I wanted to find someone who really made me curious...and what was better than infinitesimal sculptures embedded within cityscapes?
SO WHO IS SLINKACHU?

Slinkachu is a London-based artist whose work embodies elements of
street art, sculpture, installation art and photography.
Slinkachu's artworks intrigued me because of their unconventional depictions of everyday scenes. He often conjures imaginative narratives based on regular sightings and mundane objects such as spilt water or a bag of Cheetos to create his art. This eye for detail and fun made me look more into his intentions for his works and how I could take inspiration from his style and content and well as concept.

HOW ARE HIS WORKS RELEVANT TO US?
His artworks are a reflection of the lonely and melancholic lives of city-dwellers, who seldom pay attention to the little details as they are often caught up in the hustle of our lives. Through these small sculptures scattered all over the cities of several countries globally, Slinkachu embeds a sense of surprise and wonder in everyday life.
I found the reasons for his works to be extremely profound. As a city dweller myself, I rarely take the time to absorb my surroundings and appreciate the details around me. With works like this, viewers are given a reason to pause, reflect and appreciate their surroundings better.

SETTING. Who said artworks must only be displayed in galleries and on pedestals? In my opinion, Slinkanchu was able to convert a simple depiction of an everyday scene to something refreshing just by having his artworks interacting with the different architectural elements in cities (i.e. walls, buildings, pavements, etc).
While making artworks, I think we should all think about incorporating this form of unexpectedness to elevate the way our works are viewed.

2
SCALE. Any artwork could have its meaning entirely subverted just by playing around with the art elements of scale and proportion. The main feature that attracted me to Slinkachu's artworks was essentially their much minuscule scale and the artistic precision of their small details. From this, I learnt to not stick to the tried and tested methods and experiment more with proportion in relation to my own art.
3
PHOTOGRAPHY. Even the way the sculptures were photographed amplified the visual qualities of the artwork and gave it more character. The angle and distance at which the images were shot allowed the viewers to see it in that specific perspective, which could be part of the artist's intention for the work. If we could present our artworks in two forms, the three-dimensional physical form as well as the two-dimensional photographed version of it, the works might be perceived and understood differently by viewers.
